Talking about mental health without labelling people

Starting a conversation with someone close while respecting their words and boundaries.

Many different situations Mental health is shaped by personal and social factors and living conditions. A difficulty cannot therefore be reduced to a person’s willpower. Supportive relationships and environments matter, alongside care when needed. Opening a conversation Instead of choosing a label for someone, you can start with what they told you: “You mentioned a difficult time. Would you like to talk about it again?”. Leave room for a no. This is an example of dialogue, not a therapeutic method. Respect diversity There is no single Moroccan or African way of discussing emotions. Someone may prefer French, Darija, another language or everyday words. Ask what suits them rather than assuming their beliefs, family situation or needs. A specific offer “Would you like help preparing questions for a professional?” leaves space for choice. You do not have to make a diagnosis, tell other people about their situation or promise to solve the problem.
